Open Position: Library Director

The Board of Trustees of the Hornell Public Library seek creative and enthusiastic candidates for the position of Library Director.

Responsibilities. The Public Library Director for the City of Hornell, NY reports to a nine-member Library Board of Trustees, and works with the Board, staff and stakeholders to support and implement the strategic vision that align the library’s mission, goals, and objectives with the community’s needs and priorities. Overall responsibilities include developing and maintaining effective internal and external communications; building and leading a diverse team of talented staff to manage all library operations; planning, evaluating and oversight of the library budget; working closely in support of/from The Southern Tier Library System and its 48 member libraries; and developing additional revenue sources.  The director provides leadership and oversight for all library functions including internal and public-facing activities.

Essential attributes and skills include vision, creativity, and enthusiasm; ability to network, partner, and promote library services; budget experience; political acumen; demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; consensus-building skills; and ability to work effectively with a policy-making board. The successful candidate will also demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills while possessing comfort and skill in fundraising and development activities. The Board seeks a progressive, energetic candidate with a passion for the work of libraries and a thorough knowledge of current trends, technologies, and “best practices” for library services.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Master’s Degree in Librarianship, Library Science, or closely-related field from a library school that is accredited by the American Library Association or recognized by the New York State Education Department as following acceptable education practices.
  • Possession of a New York State Public Librarian’s professional certificate is required at time of appointment and must be maintained on a continuous basis throughout the term of appointment.
  • Must meet Civil Service evaluation requirements for this position

Preferred qualifications: Library Director experience or 2+ years in an administrative capacity within a public library environment and 2+ years of supervisory experience.

Compensation: Salary Range $48,000-$55,000 depending on years and range of experience. Position includes health insurance and NYS retirement benefits.
